De Villiers Hamman, Marie Louise

Marie Louise de Villiers Hamman was born in 1952.  She graduated with BA Fine Arts degree in the seventies.  Majoring in painting, she was not a follower of conceptual installation art.  What she found inspiring was the etching plates, after using them to transfer the image onto fabriano paper.  She rather exhibited the plates itself as a work of art than the etching prints.

For 6 years after graduating she painted in London, and held frequent exhibitions of oil paintings.  Marie Louise de Villiers Hamman did a post graduate course in Printmaking, at the Chelsea School of Fine Arts.

Soon after returning to South Africa, she discovered her technique, the media that captured this artist's attention and interest, foil.  She constructs her own ecthing surface by using foil on board.

The reflection of light on the silver surface, creates a colour more white than white.  Initially the technique controlled her application of paint, but today she controls the textures to contribute to her subject matter.

Although a lot of artists use silver leaf as an artist media to create art, she is the pioneer in the field of painting with tin foil and acrylic paint.  Acrylic paint according to her is a modern media, and the translucent quality of the paint, when applied thin, creates atmospheric space.
